Impact of Shoe Production

Every year, more than 20 billion shoes are manufactured around the world, which releases large amounts of carbon dioxide, responsible for 1.4% of greenhouse gas emissions globally
A pair of sneakers generates 30 lbs of CO2 emissions, equivalent to keeping a 100-watt light bulb on for a week

Consequence of Shoe Waste

In the United States, more than 200 million pairs of shoes end up in landfills each year
It can take 30 to 40 years to decompose one shoe

Need for Shoes

Over 600 million people worldwide do not own a pair of shoes

The Solution

Collecting Shoes

ReLace bins are located in convenient places, making it easy for you to drop off shoes
For every shoe you donate to ReLace, you prevent chemicals from entering our soil AND you help decrease shoe production

Recycling

When you recycle old shoes, we reuse shoe material to make new shoes
When we recycle shoes, we save shoes from going to the landfill

Reusing Shoes

Any new or lightly used shoes are donated to Compass SF families who are at risk of homelessness
By donating shoes, we support families who have limited access to shoes
